Image Analysis Workflow for 2-D Electrophoresis Gels Based on ImageJ
A number of commercial software packages are currently available to perform digital two-dimensional electrophoresis (2D-GE) gel analysis. However, both the high cost of the commercial packages and the unavailability of a standard data analysis workflow, have prompted several groups to develop freeware systems to perform certain steps of gel analysis. Unfortunately, to the best of our knowledge none of them offer a package that performs all the steps envisaged in a 2D-GE gel analysis. Here we describe an ImageJ-based procedure, able to manage all the steps of a 2D-GE gel analysis. ImageJ is a free available image processing and analysis application developed by National Institutes of Health (NIH) and widely used in different life sciences fields as medical imaging, microscopy, western blotting and PAGE. Nevertheless no one has yet developed a procedure enabled to compare spots on 2D-GE gels. We collected all used ImageJ tools in a plug-in that allows us to perform the whole 2D-GE analysis. To test it, we performed a set of 2D-GE experiments on plasma samples from 9 patients victims of acute myocardial infarction and 8 controls, and we compared the results obtained by our procedure to those obtained using a widely diffuse commercial package, finding similar performance
More on microstate geometries of 4d black holes
We construct explicit examples of microstate geometries of four-dimensional
black holes that lift to smooth horizon-free geometries in five dimensions.
Solutions consist of half-BPS D-brane atoms distributed in .
Charges and positions of the D-brane centers are constrained by the bubble
equations and boundary conditions ensuring the regularity of the metric and the
match with the black hole geometry. In the case of three centers, we find that
the moduli spaces of solutions includes disjoint one-dimensional components of
(generically) finite volume.Comment: 25 page
A genetic algorithm-assisted semi-adaptive MMSE multi-user detection for MC-CDMA mobile communication systems
In this work, a novel Minimum-Mean Squared-Error (MMSE) multi-user detector is proposed for MC-CDMA transmission systems working over mobile radio channels characterized by time-varying multipath fading. The proposed MUD algorithm is based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA)-assisted per-carrier MMSE criterion. The GA block works in two successive steps: a training-aided step aimed at computing the optimal receiver weights using a very short training sequence, and a decision-directed step aimed at dynamically updating the weights vector during a channel coherence period. Numerical results evidenced BER performances almost coincident with ones yielded by ideal MMSE-MUD based on the perfect knowledge of channel impulse response. The proposed GA-assisted MMSE-MUD clearly outperforms state-of-the-art adaptive MMSE receivers based on deterministic gradient algorithms, especially for high number of transmitting users
Is the team leading surgeon criminally liable for his collaboratorsâ errors? judges confirm responsibility and condemn an otorhinolaryngologist
In current healthcare, delivery of medical and surgical treatment takes place in a multidisciplinary manner. This raises the problem of distinguishing the conditions under which the person who has properly carried out his duties, respecting the related leges artis, can be held responsible for damages materially caused by another member of the medical team. Jurisprudence has developed the so-called âprinciple of trustâ for which every member of the team can rely on the fact that other members are acting in compliance with the leges artis of their specialisation. The Supreme Court has limited the application of this principle. The authors examine the jurisprudence on responsibility of the team in otolaryngology and conclude that individual liability should be limited to the specific expertise of the individual specialist
An atypical case of trigeminal trophic syndrome: a legal medicine perspective in medical responsibility
BACKGROUND: Trigeminal trophic syndrome is a rare complication of peripheral or central damage to the trigeminal nerve characterized by anesthesia, paresthesia and a secondary persistent facial ulceration. METHODS: We describe the case of a 40-year-old woman with previous history of Le Fort I osteotomy for a class III malocclusion who developed trigeminal trophic syndrome. Atypically, the cutaneous symptoms appeared bilaterally and 8âyears after surgery. RESULTS: Differential diagnosis was based on clinical history, tissue biopsy and serologic evaluation. Atypical findings could be linked to the surgical burdens of Le Fort I osteotomy, a procedure characterized by a bilateral incision on the maxillofacial bones with a reasonable probability of causing a bilateral injury of the peripheral branches of the trigeminal nerve. CONCLUSION: Although the long delay between trigeminal trophic syndrome onset and surgery and the absence of adequate medical evidence cannot confirm a link with previous surgery in this case, the increasing number of maxillofacial surgery cases suggests that this complication may be more frequent in the next decades, and thus, involved specialists should be aware of this condition as a possible complication of maxillofacial surgery procedures
